MRU identifies flight instructors killed in plane crash

Mount Royal University has identified both pilots who died in a plane crash Monday evening northwest of Cochrane.

Reynold “Reyn” Johnson and Jeff Bird were both instructors for the school and were flying one of the university’s planes.

Johnson had a 35-year career in aviation with Air Canada and Jazz before coming to the school to teach.

Bird was also a very experienced pilot, having spent time in the Royal Canadian Air Force flying helicopters.

He was stationed with the 408 Squadron in Edmonton before becoming an instructor with the Canadian Air Force in Moose Jaw.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
