TSB: Investigators nearly done gathering evidence from MRU plane crash scene

The Transportation Safety Board says investigators are almost finished gathering evidence from the scene of a plane crash northwest of Cochrane, which killed two flight instructors from Mount Royal University Tuesday evening.

According to officials, getting images at the crash site has been slow so far.

“Connectivity out in the field for phones and cell coverage is low,” TSB Western Regional Manager Jon Lee explained. “I’ve been promised some photos from my investigator down there, but he hasn’t been able to send any yet. We do know there was a post-impact fire.”

Investigators are expected to head over to the Mount Royal flight operations centre at Springbank Airport on Wednesday.

“The data collection is going to continue with aircraft records, maintenance records, flight crew records and interviews and basically looking at the operational aspect and collecting data related to it,” Lee said.

The plane that went down is an Italian-made Tecnam twin engine trainer, built in 2011. The model is uncommon in Canada, but MRU has been using it for a few years now.
