How a Trump presidency will impact trade between Canada and the US

One of the biggest questions Canadian’s will have in the coming months and years will be how Donald Trump’s presidency will impact us.

A political scientist is weighing in about what we can expect when it comes to trade.

Keith Brownsey is with Mount Royal University in Calgary.

He said some people will celebrate because of new pipelines that will likely be approved, but Canada and the US trade quite a few things.

“Look for problems with softwood lumber, look for problems with steel. Look for problems with agricultural exports, especially beef and pork. All of that will be coming home to roost very soon,” Brownsey said.

He said unlike Republicans of the past, this group is leaning towards protectionism rather than free trade.

“You’re going to get an executive and a legislative branch determined to end trade with Mexico. Not just renegotiate NAFTA, but literally end trade with Mexico. And a lot of that will wash over into Canada as well.”
