Calgary Police Half Marathon brings out a sense of community between cops and citizens

A little chill and a little rain didn’t dampen the sense of community at Sunday’s  2016 Calgary Police Half Marathon.

There’s something special about seeing sworn officers and civilian members of the Calgary Police Service mix it up with the community for a shared love of running.

“It’s a fantastic thing just to stand there and absorb that going on,” race director and police superintendent Guy Slater said.

“It’s an event run by a bunch of volunteers from the policing community — sworn and civilian members — and also a number of citizens,” Slater said.

“It’s a reflection of the running community (here).”

Sunday’s marathon started and finished at Mount Royal University with a scenic 5k, 10k or half-marathon-length route in between. Money raised for the year is still being tallied, but partner MRU usually sees roughly $10,000 yearly, to go toward scholarships for its social programs.

And this year did see just shy of 1,000 runners for the half-marathon, about 300 for the 10k and about 400 for the 5k.

“We were really happy with those results … it’s a good set of numbers,” Slater said.

As for the weather, Slater pointed out that’s always a bit of a gamble here in Calgary.
