MRU and WestJet enhance training through mentorship, resource sharing

Thanks to a new agreement reached with WestJet, aviation students at Mount Royal University will now have access to the airline’s expertise and equipment to enhance their training.

The new deal means MRU instructors and their students will benefit from WestJet’s state-of-the-art simulators and training procedures.

Leaders from both organizations signed the agreement on the WestJet campus Monday.

“It is extremely important to support our neighbours here in Calgary, as well as the next generation of aviation professionals and this partnership lets us do both,” said Scott Wilson, WestJet VP of Operations. “WestJet has the best pilots in the world and we are proud of the knowledge, experience, and professionalism the students will be able to take advantage of.”

Mount Royal University Dean of Business and Communication Studies, Elizabeth Evans, said the agreement is important because it means students can learn from the professionalism demonstrated by WestJet pilots and staff.

“WestJet has long supported our flight training school, and this new agreement can only strengthen the relationship between our organizations,” explained Evans.

The partnership could be expanded in the future to include recruitment programs.

WestJet currently provides a yearly scholarship and bursary to first-year Mount Royal aviation students.
