Hello to the beautiful community of Vulcan!

Article content

As the new reporter for the Vulcan Advocate I am pleased to introduce myself.

I have recently spent nearly two years reporting for the Sylvan Lake News and the Eckville Echo. I have enjoyed my time at these newspapers and serving both of these communities, but it is time for a change.

I was the sports reporter for the Sylvan Lake newspaper, a population of 14,000 and the full coverage reporter for the Eckville Echo, a population of about 1,100.

Spending the last two years of my life in both towns I can say that I have grown a love for the small town feel.

I grew up in the big and hectic city of Calgary. When you live and work in a small town, sometimes there just isn’t anything that makes you want to go back to the bigger and busier cities. I like the smaller towns.

I earned a degree in journalism from Mount Royal University, education that I value and would encourage anyone to pursue if they have a love for journalism.

Some of my favourite stories to write are sports. I love sports!

I covered minor hockey last season and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. There is nothing like cheering your home team on and watching them score the winning goals.

I was also seen on the football field several times where I enjoyed capturing the moment of players running with all their might to get that touchdown. Nothing like a good touchdown.

I have covered many other sports, but I must admit hockey and football are my favourites.

Let’s just say when cheering the home team on, I sometimes make some of the parents sound quiet. Even if the home team is losing, I still back them up with encouragement.

When I am not in the role of reporter, I am a volunteer firefighter.

During my reporting for the Sylvan Lake News and Eckville Echo I also volunteered for the Eckville Fire Department.

Being toned out in the middle of the night to help extinguish a fire or help at a motor vehicle accident wasn’t easy, but it is most definitely worth it. I still wake up the next morning to go to work and am often still beaming about helping people.

I sincerely hope to get onto the local department here. Being able to help rescue and save people’s lives is in my blood. That and I really like the colour red and riding high in fire trucks.

Reporting for and serving the beautiful town of Vulcan I plan to get to know the wonderful people living in this town.

I can’t wait to explore everything this town has to offer. I am truly grateful to be climbing on board with the Advocate staff.

I look forward to meeting the community at different events and providing great coverage.

I hope to earn the respect of this community and develop good working relationships with everyone.

I look forward to getting to know all of you here in this wonderful community.
