Hundreds turn out for the Calgary Police Half Marathon

An Olympic sprinter greeted runners and walkers as they crossed the finish line at the Calgary Police Half Marathon at Mount Royal University.

As many as 1,000 runners were able to participate in Saturday’s half marathon event, while the shorter races such as the 10K and 5K run and walk were limited to 500 participants.

CPS Superintendent Guy Slater says even those in the competition could show up to meet a homegrown hero.

“We’re really excited because we’re welcoming Akeem Haynes. He’s the bronze medalist in the men’s relay from last year’s summer Olympics in Rio,” said Slater.

Proceeds from the event go to six CPS programs that help youth stay out of life of crime.
