Crafting sexual assault policies at universities across Canada a difficult venture: researcher

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As college students come back to campus it’s important to include sexual assault policies at their post secondary institutions.

Yet crafting these rules and regulations can be difficult.

Irene Shankar looked at how Mount Royal University in Calgary dealt with these situations.

She says there is a lot of confusion about what to do after a sexual assault.

“A lot of people are not very clear on what’s available on campus, even those who are in charge of helping students.”

She says universities across the country are catering to the privileged white male not because they are being intentionally exclusive, but simply because they are catering to their audience.

“If the university had been visualized as if there would be women on campus, people who would need sexual assault services, then we would have sexual assault services.”

Shankar says for the 103 English speaking universities in Canada she studied, only 25 have standalone sexual assault policies.
