Two people have been slapped with a total of 39 charges in connection with the theft and fraudulent use of debit and credit cards at Calgary’s three main post-secondary institutions.

Police started investigating in March after multiple complainants came forward reporting that their credit and debit cards had been stolen from their wallet or purse while the victims were in a library or locker-rooms on the University of Calgary campus.

Not long after, the cards were used to purchase items at nearby businesses, police said.

Investigators later learned similar offences had taken place at SAIT and Mount Royal University.

It’s believed more than 50 credit and debit cards were stolen and fraudulently used about 300 times.

Alexander Louis Harsanyi, 22, of Calgary, and Monica Rebalski, 22, of Calgary, were both charged with multiple counts of theft under $5,000 and fraud under $5,000. They are expected in court June 29.

Police continue working with security teams at all three schools and nearby businesses, and expect more charges to be laid.

Calgarians are reminded to keep their valuables with them and not easily visible to people walking by when in public areas such as a gym or library, or to ensure they are kept somewhere secure, like a locked locker, if they must be left unattended.

Any suspicious activity should be reported to security or to police.
