Pair charged with stealing debit & credit cards at MRU, SAIT, U of C

Police have laid 39 charges against two Calgarians after multiple debit and credit cards were stolen from post-secondary schools.

An investigation was launched in March, after thieves took the cards out of purses and wallets from the library and campus locker rooms at the University of Calgary.

The cards were used soon after to buy items at nearby businesses.

Police soon discovered similar thefts were happening at SAIT and Mount Royal University.

It’s estimated over 50 credit and debit cards were stolen over a period of three months, and used for at least 300 transactions.

Alexander Louis Harsanyi, 22 and Monica Rebalski, 22, are both charged with multiple counts of theft under $5,000, and fraud under $5,000.

More charges are pending.

Police are recommending Calgarians help prevent similar thefts by keeping their valuables nearby or ensuring they are locked up somewhere secure, while in a public area.

They are also asking anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to contact security, or Calgary police online or by calling 403-266-1234.
