City transportation head wants misinformation on southwest BRT to stop

The City of Calgary says a group that’s opposed to a Calgary Transit project in the southwest is spreading myths.

Sean Somers with the Transportation department said the group called ‘Ready To Engage’ doesn’t have its facts straight about the southwest Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, that would run from Woodbine to the downtown core.

Somers told 660 NEWS that one of the biggest misconceptions is that people haven’t been consulted enough.

“Going back to about 2010, there was a variety of engagement and consultation that happened throughout that area,” Somers said. “At Mount Royal (University), the Rockyview Hospital, with the adjacent community associations, (and) we’ve had follow up meetings.”

The group doesn’t like that the plan includes dedicated bus lanes and is concerned it will cause more traffic congestion.

It also said that it will impact some park space, but Somers says that is simply false.
