Visit of NBS faculty concludes

The four-day visit faculty of Nottingham Business School (NBS), United Kingdom, to University Business School (UBS), Panjab University, concluded today. The potential areas of collaboration were identified between the two institutions for joint academic events, student and faculty exchange, and developing joint programmes. Dr Martin Jones and Dr Banita Lal represented NBS.  Vice-Chancellor Arun K Grover in his address emphasised the critical juncture that public universities were at. “They are facing great competition and have to think innovatively and work hard to stay at the top,” he said. He exhorted the UBS  faculty to seize the wonderful opportunities coming its way that would provide platforms for growth and exposure to both students and faculty. 

IGS student chapter inaugurated 

Indian Geotechnical Society, Student Chapter, PEC, was inaugurated at the PEC University of Technology by Prof G L Sivakumar Babu, President, Indian Geotechnical Society, and New Delhi. Dr Siby John, HoD, Civil Engineering Department, congratulated everyone and encouraged the establishments of various Indian and international civil engineering societies. He stressed upon the importance of these student chapters as they provide a good platform for the overall improvement of students’ technical skills. This was followed by an expert lecture on ‘Rehabilitation of geotechnical structures based on failure analysis’ by Prof Babu. By sharing his own experiences, he underscored the importance of analysis of design failure and thus came up with new and innovative ways to tackle them. 

Students protest 

The students of the UILS (University Institute of Legal Studies), Panjab University, staged a protest for the second consecutive day against the decision of the authority to increase the number of subjects in fourth year from 10 to 12. The students were of the view that increasing the subjects would add to the workload.  On Thursday, the department students had boycotted the classes. PUSU leader Hardik Ahluwalia said the department had assured to hold a meeting following the first day of protest, to deliberate on the demand raised by the students, however, the meeting didn’t take place.  Brijeshwar, a law student, was of the opinion that due to this rule, the students were left with less time to prepare for moots, debates, declamations and other academic activities. They demanded that this rule be reversed as it was totally against the interest of students.

Anthropology colloquium held 

The first anthropology colloquium entitled, ‘How do inequalities get normalised? insights from a study of resource politics in the western Himalayas’ was held in the department of anthropology, PU. The talk was delivered by Dr Tashi Tsering, department of general education, Mount Royal University, Calgary, Canada. Dr Tashi illustrated through examples how social relations operate across different resource sectors. In addition, he shared insights on how scholars or researchers can study prevailing social relations operating across sectors. 

Teej celebrated 

Staff and students of Government Home Science College, Sector 10, celebrated Teej. The students gave mesmerising performances depicting culture and heritage of Punjab. Ms Teej Contest was also organised wherein Navpreet of BSc (second year), Ramneek, Niharika and Varleen of BSc (first year) won various titles.  TNS
