MRU grounds Tecnam aircraft after fatal crash

More changes have been announced for Mount Royal University’s flight training program as the school continues to mourn the tragic deaths of two instructors.
The program was going to resume at the pace students were comfortable with, but were told Thursday the university will voluntarily ground its two remaining Tecnam P2006T aircraft.
Students will continue to learn on one of five single-engine Cessna 172 aircraft. MRU is looking at options for students requiring twin-engine training, which could be provided through other schools.
Chair of the aviation program Leon Cygman said the decision was made by the university out of caution.
The school continues to mourn the loss of Jeffery Bird and Reynold Johnson, who died in a plane crash on Feb. 13.
The 66 students currently in the aviation program resumed their studies this week.
